Hawaiian Electric is accepting applications for Battery Bonus, a new program that will pay a cash incentive for residential and commercial customers on Oahu to add energy storage (a battery) to an existing or new rooftop solar system. This one-time incentive will help move Hawaii toward the company's goal of 100% clean energy by 2045 and add more renewable resources to the grid in the short-term when the AES coal-fired plant is retired in September 2022.

A New York Energy Innovation First: Battery Storage & Vehicle Chargers On One Site

This project will be the first in New York City that combines energy storage and electric vehicle charging. Centrica will design, build, own and operate a 5-megawatt/15-megawatt hour battery system and 18 direct-current fast chargers at the site. New York Power Authority and Electric Power Research Institute Awarded Grant to Research Long-Duration Storage

California ISO Prepares for Surge in Grid-Scale Energy Storage

The ISO is projecting a four-fold increase in the amount of battery storage on its system from late last year to this summer. At the end of 2020, the ISO had about 250 megawatts of storage resources -- primarily 4-hour batteries -- connected to the grid. It currently has about 500 MW on its system, and expects to have a total of 2,000 MW by August 1. This rapid pace of growth is expected to continue in the years ahead.

Recently, researchers at Idaho National Laboratory developed a new electrode material for an electrochemical cell that can efficiently convert excess electricity and water into hydrogen. When demand for electricity increases, the electrochemical cell is reversible, converting hydrogen back into electricity for the grid.
