image According to a recent BNEF report, there will be over 500 different EV models available globally by 2022, and 54 million EVs on the road by 2040 -- up from from 1.7 million today. These trends have major implications for fleet operators, car manufacturers, cities, utilities, and charging infrastructure providers around the world. Understanding the challenges and positioning today for the future is critical for achieving success in the emerging electrified transportation ecosphere.

Organized by the Smart Grid Observer, the online Transportation Electrification Virtual Forum, on June 22, 2021 convenes top thought leaders and innovators to examine how growing EV adoption rates will impact stakeholders across the spectrum, with emphasis on emerging technologies, opportunities and challenges. Business models and programs designed to ensure widespread EV adoption and optimization for all parties involved will be a particular focus of this Forum.

Trends and Key Advances in Li-ion Batteries for Electric Vehicles

While electric vehicle sales remained surprisingly resilient during 2020, the market is still underpinned by government subsidies and policies. To move away from this, improvements to Li-ion batteries are needed to bring about longer range, faster charging and lower prices. This presentation will provide an overview of the Li-ion market, current trends in xEV battery technology and discuss key advances to Li-ion battery chemistry and design that can help enable the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.

The Journey to Vehicle-to-Grid Integration (VGI): A Charging Network's Perspective

The potential transition to a vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging paradigm is driven by three main factors: the desire to avoid cost, generate revenue, and enhance the resiliency of a grid with a growing number of renewable energy resources. Today, utility rates for EV charging (V1G) are a function of time, demand, and fleet requirements. However, feasibility studies currently indicate that vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-building scenarios can have promising implementations. These are seen as precursors to V2G, for which some regulatory aspects are still to be resolved. This presentation offers a charging network provider's view on V2G, including the state of enabling technologies, objectives to be kept in mind, current obstacles and challenges, and next steps to take on the VGI journey.

Powering the eBus Revolution: Innovations in Charging Technology, Grid Integration and Operations

This presentation will address technology innovations ranging from new, smaller and integrated charging solutions for depots to a combination of onboard batteries, battery storage and on-route charging infrastructure.? How is renewable energy being integrated and what role do microgrids play in e-bus infrastructure planning? How are urban depot space limitations being creatively addressed-- one of the biggest areas of concern for both urban planners and bus fleet operators alike.

In terms of operations and management, we will examine the underlying technologies (such as energy management and advanced analytics), that are enabling transit authorities and district logistics managers to gain more control over the energy they are using, while still delivering the same timetables, frequency, quantity of passengers and buses as diesel fleets.?

Speaker: Daniel Simounet, Vice President - Transportation Sector, Americas region, Hitachi ABB Power Grids

Key Considerations When Electrifying Your Fleet

Driven by progress in the passenger car segment, the tipping point for electrification is here. The market is gaining momentum as fleets look to reduce costs, meet new regulations, and address social pressures for cleaner transportation options. There are a few key considerations to take into account when electrifying fleets, the process is more involved than just purchasing an electric vehicle (EV). This presentation will highlight the top keys to consider when evaluating commercial medium-duty EVs for your fleet, from routes and usage patterns to driving training based on real-world experience.

Self-Driving Electric Vehicles and the Future of Transportation

Today, transportation is responsible for 28% of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in the United States, making it the single largest contributor to carbon pollution. Over 6 million Americans with disabilities identify transportation as a chief barrier to access. According to the National Safety Council, about 42,060 people died in vehicle crashes in 2020. In this session, a leading developer of all-electric, self-driving vehicles will discuss the role of autonomous vehicles in creating a more sustainable, accessible, and safer future of transportation. We will look at the state of AV technology to date, current pilots and deployments, as well as what the company has done to leverage AVs in addressing critical needs in disadvantaged communities during the pandemic.
