Electric Vehicles: Driving the Customer Experience

As electric vehicles (EV) continue to grow with each passing year, electric utilities have an important role to play beyond preparing grid infrastructure and installing charging stations. In this session, we'll use a national survey of Americans to showcase how utilities can better educate their residential customers about EVs, engage them in EV-specific rates and programs, and improve the overall customer experience around EVs. We'll also share successful EV programs in the field today that can provide a blueprint for other utilities to follow.
  • Consumers' top concerns about electric vehicles
  • How consumers' view the role of the utility around EVs
  • When EV owners' prefer to charge their vehicles
  • The most pertinent areas of need for EV education

Standardizing EV Integration into Grid Operations

One of the biggest challenges and biggest opportunities in the integration of EV capabilities into grid operations is the standardization of the communications infrastructure. Without a standardized, interoperable infrastructure, roadblocks ranging from costs to consumer frustration will prevent the optimum deployment of integrated charging capabilities that are required to decarbonize both the electrical grid and the transportation sector. Yet today there is no agreement on the best communications infrastructure or which communications standards to use. The EU, Japan, China and the US all have their own ideas and standards. Even in the US the debate is raging as is evident in the California efforts to standardize the communications infrastructure for EV charging and grid integration.

This session will explore the efforts to standardize EV charging infrastructure and cover:
  • The different integration use cases: V1G, V2G, VxG
  • The emerging communications standards for EV charging integration: OpenADR, IEEE 2030.5,SAE J 3072, ISO 15118, OCPP
  • The role of Regulators in standardizing the EV Charging Infrastructure
  • The progress and challenges in California

Vehicle to Grid (V2): Advances, Opportunities and Challenges

As the number of electric vehicles (EV's) increases, the opportunity to utilize them when they are connected to charging networks increases as well. Power grids of all types will benefit from the ability to charge and discharge power from these vehicles, and the ability to control this charging and discharging activity represents technical and financial benefits for society. In this session, NextEnergy together with Femata Energy and Rhombus Energy will host a discussion on electric Vehicle To Grid opportunities.

Workshop: Building a Plug and Play EV Charging Infrastructure

The communications landscape for extracting grid benefits from the electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure is a confusing landscape. For grid operators, the choices are particularly confusing as no industry-wide agreement exists on the optimum choice of communications protocols or functional standards for the infrastructure. Further complicating this, the appropriate protocols and standards vary depending on how the EV is being used - e.g., managed charging (DR) versus leveraging the EV as a bi-directional, inverter-based battery system (also referred to as Vehicle-to-Grid or V2G) to better manage grid operations.

This half-day workshop will review applicable standards by electric vehicle use-case for Vehicle-Grid Integration (VGI). This includes managed charging (EV charging optimized for both EV owner/operator and grid operations); V2G-DC (where the bi-directional inverter is on the EVSE) and V2G-AC (where the bi-directional inverter is on the EV itself).

This workshop will summarize the various standardization activities on vehicle-grid integration including work in process by the Society of Automotive Engineers, Underwriter's Lab, IEEE, CharIN and the SunSpec Alliance. We further review work in process (or concluded) by the California Public Utility Commission and IOUs on adoption and use of the standards.

The key takeaways from this workshop will be:
  • An understanding of the current Vehicle to Grid Integration (VGI) standards in place or in process for communications between grid operators and EVs
  • An understanding of the differences between V1G vs V2G use cases and relevant communications standards
  • An understanding of deployment architectures and communications protocols for VGI applications
  • A comparison of the leading standards in terms of applications and maturity
  • An understanding of the challenges and processes for achieving real plug and play interoperability in the EV charging infrastructure
Workshop Schedule:

9.00 - 9.30 am -- Introduction to the workshop: EV Adoption and requirements for standards, definitions, architecture, protocols

9.30 - 10.00 am -- Use cases and comm system architectures for Managed Charging and V2G Applications

10.00 - 10:45 am -- VGI Communications Standardization and protocols: SAE, UL, EPRI, SunSpec, ISO, OCA, CPUC, other

10.45- 11.15 am -- Break

11:15 - 12:15 pm -- A deeper look at V1G, V2G-DC and V2G-AC standardization

12:15 - 1:00 pm -- Working Lunch: Achieving a Plug and Play interoperable infrastructure
